— Multilingual SEO
What a multilingual SEO company does that translation can't
ProStar SEO is a multilingual SEO agency that builds search visibility in each language your customers use, from the keyword research to the hreflang tags. Our strategists plan every language version of your website as its own market, with its own search intent and its own competitors. Google ranks a French page against French pages. It never compares your French page to your English one.
A multilingual SEO company researches, writes and optimizes content for search engines in multiple languages, then connects those language versions so Google shows the right one to the right searcher.
Translation converts words. Multilingual SEO converts demand, and SEO translation only works when the translated page targets what the local target audience actually types into the search results. CSA Research surveyed 8,709 consumers in 29 countries and found that 76% prefer to buy products with information in their own language, so a multilingual website that ranks is a sales channel, and one that doesn’t rank is a cost.
A common pattern on multilingual websites: an English site with strong rankings, and translated pages in French, Spanish or German that collect almost no organic traffic. The translations are accurate. The keywords are wrong.
Translation vs localization: search behavior changes by language
Localization adapts the full page to a local audience: the keywords, the examples, the currency, the units, the cultural references and the way a buyer phrases the problem. Search behavior changes from one language to the next, and it changes between countries that share a language. A Quebec buyer searches “soumission” where a buyer in France types “devis” for the same quote.
That gap is why content localization beats word-for-word translation. Our writers localize the page for cultural relevance first, then check each target keyword against real search volume and keyword difficulty in that market’s database. Website localization also covers the user experience around the words: date formats, the language selection menu, forms and checkout.
A translated keyword with zero searches is a page nobody finds.
Why machine translation alone loses rankings
Machine translation produces grammatical text fast, and it’s a legitimate first step. It doesn’t choose keywords. A machine engine translates the English phrase literally, while the searcher in Spain or Brazil uses a different term entirely, so the page targets a query that has no search volume.
We use AI and machine translation where they save time, then run MTPE (machine translation post-editing) with native speakers who fix meaning, tone and keyword translation.
Post-editing turns a raw translation into localized content that reads as if it were written in that language. Good international SEO translation keeps the keyword, the linguistic register and the brand terms consistent, which is why we load your glossary into translation management systems before the first page ships. Proofreaders then check the title tags, meta descriptions, meta tags and alt text, the metadata most translation workflows skip.

— Multilingual SEO Services
Our multilingual SEO services
Our multilingual SEO services cover the full stack: research, writing, technical SEO, link building and measurement, in every language you sell in. Each service below has one owner and one measured output per language version.
International keyword research in each target language
International keyword research starts from the target language, never from your English list. Our strategists pull search volume and keyword difficulty for each market, map the search intent behind every query, and run a competitor analysis on the pages that already rank there. The output is one keyword map per language, with each keyword assigned to a single URL.
The research starts with seed keywords from native speakers and from your sales team in each market. We then pull volume, difficulty and SERPs per country database (US, Canada, France, Spain and others), group queries by search intent, and flag the keywords where the English term is also what local searchers type, which is common in B2B software.
This multilingual SEO process prevents the most expensive mistake in multi-language SEO: building a page for a keyword that nobody in that market searches.
SEO localization and multilingual content written by native speakers
SEO localization is where the keyword map becomes pages. Native writers produce multilingual content in French, English and Spanish, and each page targets the keywords research found for that language. Our SEO content writing services team writes to a measured term list per language, so every version covers the entities and phrases its local competitors cover.
Culturally, a localized page changes more than vocabulary. It changes the examples, the proof and sometimes the offer. A page for Montreal buyers names Quebec regulations; the same service page for Paris names French ones.
Hreflang tags and technical SEO for multilingual websites
Hreflang tags tell Google and Yandex which language version to show each searcher. A wrong hreflang setup is the most common technical SEO defect on multilingual websites: missing return links, pages pointing to redirects, or a country code where a language code belongs. Our technical SEO agency team audits hreflang, canonical tags and sitemaps together, because each one can cancel the other.
- x-default for the language selection page or the fallback version
- Self-referencing canonical tags on every language version, which prevents duplicate content signals between translations
- One XML sitemap per language, with localized URLs and robots.txt rules that allow each version
- Mobile optimization and site speed checked per version, since a heavier translated template can slow a whole market
Because ProStar also builds websites, our multilingual web development team fixes the template itself instead of filing a ticket. On WordPress, we configure WPML or Weglot so the plugin outputs clean hreflang; our WordPress SEO services cover the rest of the platform. Google Search Console then confirms indexation, language by language. SEO for multilingual websites fails quietly when this layer breaks, so we check it monthly.

How we build a multilingual SEO strategy, market by market
A multilingual SEO strategy decides the order of markets, the URL structures and the search engines each version must rank on. A localized SEO strategy treats each language as a separate market with its own language targeting, and it ranks target markets before it writes a word. We rank new markets with four steps:
- Measure the search volume you can reach in each language.
- Multiply it by what one lead is worth in that market.
- Divide by the competition in that market’s SERPs.
- Launch the top market first, measure it for 90 days, then open the next.
On-page optimization then goes version by version, and off-page optimization builds high-quality backlinks from sites in each target market. A German page earns authority from German sites. Our link building services source those backlinks per language, because a link from a US blog does little for a page trying to rank in Italy or Japan.
Subfolders, subdomains or a ccTLD per country
Subfolders (example.com/fr/) keep every language version on one domain, so authority built by the English site flows to the French and Spanish ones. Subdomains tend to be treated more like separate sites, so that authority transfers more slowly. A ccTLD, a country-specific domain like example.de, sends the strongest country signal to Google and to searchers, and it asks you to build links for each domain separately.
We recommend subfolders for most brands entering two to five international markets. Country-specific domains fit enterprises with a local team, a local entity and a local budget in each country; our enterprise SEO agency handles those architectures. Subdirectories and subfolders are the same structure under two names, and both work with hreflang.
Search engines beyond Google: Bing, Baidu, Yandex and Naver
Google dominates search in North America and Europe, but it isn’t the only search engine a global SEO plan targets for a global audience. Baidu leads search in mainland China. Yandex holds a large share in Russian-speaking markets, and Naver is the default portal for many searchers in Korea. Bing powers Yahoo results and feeds several AI assistants.
Global markets rarely share one engine, so the plan is market-specific. Each engine reads language signals differently. Baidu favors Simplified Chinese hosted close to its users, and Yandex reads hreflang like Google does. A multilingual SEO strategy for China, Korea or Russia starts with the engine people use there, then picks the keywords.
Multilingual content for AI search: ChatGPT, AI Overviews and LLMs
AI search is multilingual by default. ChatGPT answers a question in the language it is asked, Google AI Overviews appear across dozens of languages, and each LLM builds its answer from sources written in that language when it finds them. Our AI SEO agency work extends to every language version we optimize.
Why an AI answer in French differs from the one in English
An LLM asked in French leans on French sources. If your brand has 40 English articles and two thin French pages, ChatGPT recommends your English competitors to French speakers, or a French competitor with better French content. The model isn’t biased against you. It simply has nothing in French to cite.
Multilingual content fixes that gap. We write French, Spanish and English pages with named entities, clear definitions and statements an LLM can quote, and we publish them on the URL each language version owns. Brand awareness in AI answers follows the same rule as rankings: the language with the content wins. That makes AI visibility part of multilingual marketing, alongside the content strategy for each market.
Measuring AI visibility and organic traffic across languages
We track organic traffic, rankings, conversion rates and AI visibility separately for each of your languages. Google Search Console splits clicks and impressions by page, so each language folder gets its own report. AI visibility gets tested with the same prompts written in each language, run against ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, so you see which markets cite your brand and which cite a competitor. International traffic from AI referrals gets tagged by language too.
- Click-through rates, local search results and search visibility per language folder
- Lead generation by market, tied to the language version that produced the lead
- AI citations per prompt, per language, month over month

We’ll run your top buyer questions in each language and show you who AI recommends. No commitment, results in one call.
FAQ: hiring a multilingual SEO consultant
A multilingual SEO consultant gets the same four questions on almost every first call. Here are the short answers.
How is multilingual SEO different from international SEO?
Multilingual SEO targets languages; international SEO targets countries. A Canadian brand selling in English and French needs multilingual SEO, while a US brand opening Mexico, Spain and Argentina needs international SEO with regional content per country. Most global brands need both, and our international SEO consultant page covers the country side.
Should we translate the whole website or start with key pages?
Start with the pages that sell: the homepage, your top service or product pages, and the pages with the highest conversion rates in your main language. Translate and localize those first, measure them for 90 days, then expand with content optimization on the next tier of pages. A free SEO audit shows which pages earn that first slot.
Which languages does ProStar SEO write in?
ProStar SEO writes natively in French, English and Spanish. For German, Portuguese, Italian or any other language, we scope native writers and proofreaders per project before we quote, and we run the keyword research ourselves in that market’s database.
How long before multilingual SEO campaigns show results?
Multilingual SEO campaigns usually show ranking movement in three to four months and significant organic traffic in six to twelve. A new language version on an established domain moves faster than a new ccTLD, because the subfolder inherits the domain’s authority.
Why brands choose ProStar as their multilingual SEO expert
ProStar SEO is a multilingual SEO expert because it runs a bilingual business itself. Our agency runs its own site in French and English, and every method on this page runs on our own site before it runs on yours.
A bilingual agency built in Quebec, Canada
ProStar SEO was founded in Quebec, Canada, where French and English share every market, and our offices in Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto and Calgary serve both.
Our Montreal SEO agency clients compete in two languages on the same street. Where a multilingual search marketing agency often bills translation by the word, we work on a monthly retainer tied to measured results per language. That’s where our bilingual SEO practice started, and multilingual SEO extends it to every language a brand adds next.
Prostarseo.com itself runs French at the root and English under /en/, connected with language-only hreflang (fr and en), so one French version serves searchers in Quebec, France, Belgium and Switzerland.
Contextual density measured in every language version
Contextual density measures how completely a page covers the terms, entities and variations its top competitors use. We measure it on every language version against that language’s own SERP, never against the English one. A French page gets scored against the French pages that rank, which builds topical authority in each market instead of a translated copy of the English one. Our contextual density guide explains the method.
Every number we report comes from a measurement, in every language.
