Forty-six results answered “automotive seo agency” in the United States on the day this edition was measured. Nine of those results are ranked lists of automotive SEO agencies. Three are agency directories. Three are forum threads where dealers ask each other who to hire. One is a California SEO page published on a site that sells electric rickshaws. This page ranks agencies as well, and this page publishes the instrument that produced the order. The SEO Contextual Density Index scores each page on five pillars, states every constant behind them, and draws every scored term from the competitors’ own pages by a fixed rule rather than from ours. No agency’s row is computed from another agency’s row, so a rival rewriting its page cannot move our number and our page cannot move theirs. ProStar SEO prints its own row at whatever rank the instrument gives it, in this edition and in every edition after, including the editions where that row sits outside the top fifteen.

The automotive SEO market, measured

Fifteen quality agencies compete for “automotive seo agency” in the United States. Others exist, and this table covers the ones the live SERP put in front of a buyer. We measured the fourteen agency service pages in that SERP plus our own car dealership page, against one 151-term list built from what the competitors write. ProStar SEO places first at 56.0, 8.0 ahead of Incrementors: 91 of 151 terms covered against 68, and 32 of them in a title or heading against 16. Coalition Technologies wins the footprint pillar at 88.2 against our 44.6, and its 6,154 page-one keywords sit against our 264. Our own page holds position 37 for the anchor, and the table prints that number beside our score.

Two business models share this SERP. Seven of the fifteen are agencies that sell services and nothing else: A3 Brands, Reunion Marketing, Wikimotive, Dealer Authority, Force Marketing, 20North Marketing and ProStar SEO. Four sell SEO attached to a product the dealer licenses: Dealer.com ships it inside the Cox Automotive platform, DealerOn ships it on top of dealership websites, Dealer Teamwork bundles it into an MPOP subscription, and Coalition Technologies sells it as one of dozens of verticals. A dealer comparing the two models is comparing a retainer with a subscription line item, and the pages do not make that difference obvious.

Geography is narrower here than in any market we have measured. Thirteen of the fifteen are based in the United States, from Burlington to Los Angeles, with two in Atlanta. The Web People works from Newton-le-Willows in Merseyside and ProStar SEO works from Quebec City. Incrementors lists Sacramento as its headquarters and keeps offices in Delhi and Patna. Dealerships buy locally, and the cohort reflects it.

Price is published by three of the fifteen on their own sites. A3 Brands quotes $2,499, $3,499 and $4,999 a month by tier, Coalition Technologies starts local SEO at $1,500 a month, and ProStar SEO publishes monthly starting prices by service. Four more carry Clutch’s brackets rather than a price of their own, and the remaining eight publish nothing. Named clients are more common: Wikimotive names Hendrick and McCluskey Chevrolet, Reunion Marketing names Jack Daniels Motors and The Niello Company, Dealer Authority names Szott Automotive Group, and Dealer.com names none. Every client here is the agency’s own statement, linked in the profiles below, and none has been verified with the dealer.

The measurement separates the cohort more cleanly than the SERP does. Coverage runs from 18 of the 151 market terms to 91, and contextual density from 5.01% to 12.40%, across pages selling the same service to the same buyer. Dealer.com ranks first in Google for the anchor and places seventh on the index, on a page of 1,197 words that covers 31 terms. Force Marketing ranks third and places fourteenth, on 551 words.

One gap runs through almost every page in this cohort, and it is the gap a dealer would notice first. Cars.com, Autotrader, CarGurus, Edmunds, Kelley Blue Book and Carfax appear on none of the fourteen competitor pages. “Vehicle detail page” appears on none, and SRP on one. The marketplaces where American car shoppers begin, and the inventory pages that carry a dealership’s actual stock, are missing from the pages where fifteen agencies sell dealership SEO. Those terms fall below the threshold to enter the instrument at all, so no agency is penalised for the silence, and the silence is worth naming.

Every score is computed from that agency’s page and site alone, against published constants. Google’s position is printed beside each score and never enters it.

Full tables below: the index (ten columns) and the characteristics (twelve columns), both sortable.

Why contextual density is the yardstick

Across the markets we have measured, the pages that rank carry more of the vocabulary a buyer uses than the pages that don’t, and they carry it as a wide set of distinct terms rather than one phrase repeated. Contextual density is that measurement: the share of a page’s words that belong to the market’s term list, read together with how many distinct terms the page covers and how often each one returns. A high reading means the page speaks the market’s language across the whole topic, which is the clearest on-page sign that an agency understands strong SEO. That is why we measure other SEO agencies’ pages on it, and why it carries most of the weight below.

Who shows up in AI answers

AI presence here is a countable figure: the number of US keywords for which Google’s AI Overview cites each domain, from the Semrush index on 2026-09-18. Nothing is scored from it; it’s printed because a buyer choosing an SEO agency in 2026 wants to know who the machines already quote. Coalition Technologies is cited on 1,782 keywords, 1Digital Agency is cited on 735 keywords, ProStar SEO on 115. Bars are log-scaled, so a bar half as long is roughly a count forty times smaller.

Semrush “AI Overview positions”, us database: keywords where the domain appears as a cited source inside the AI Overview. A related figure, keywords the domain ranks for whose SERP carries an AI Overview, runs about ten times higher for every member and is not what’s shown here.

What you’d want to know before calling them

Nothing in this table is scored. It’s the set of facts the ranking pages on this query print about each agency, collected the same way for all fifteen and tagged by source in each column header: stated means the agency says so on its own site and the bracket links to where; public record means Google Maps or Clutch; a measured count comes from the Semrush index on the pull date. Where a fact isn’t public it says so rather than guessing.

Characteristics of the 15 agencies, read from each agency’s own site on 2026-09-18 and from its Clutch profile where the site is silent. Team sizes are the agency’s own figure. A dash means the fact is not published, not that it is zero.

How to take first place on this table

The runner-up, Incrementors, sits 8.0 points behind. With every other pillar unchanged, closing that gap through coverage alone means covering 30 more of the 151 terms on the published list. The list, each term’s document frequency across the cohort, the measuring script and its checksum are on the methodology page. Any agency on this table can request a re-measurement; the result is printed, with the date, whatever it shows.

How to choose an automotive SEO agency

Start with the website platform, because the platform sets the ceiling. A dealership site usually runs on a vendor product such as Dealer.com, DealerOn or Dealer eProcess, and that vendor controls the template, the URL structure and much of the markup on inventory pages. An agency working on top of someone else’s platform can write content and build links, and often cannot touch a title tag pattern or a canonical rule. Ask the agency to name a change it made on a site running your platform, and ask what the platform refused.

Separate the inventory from the content next. A dealership’s largest page count sits in vehicle detail pages and search results pages, and that inventory turns over every month. Content pages about a model, a trim or a service live for years. The two need opposite treatments, and an agency that talks only about blog posts has not thought about the ninety percent of the site that changes weekly. Ask what happens to a vehicle detail page when the car sells.

Ask which OEM programs the agency is certified in, and who pays. Franchise dealers work inside manufacturer digital programs with approved-vendor lists, brand guidelines and co-op reimbursement, and an agency outside the program can cost the dealer the co-op money. Dealer Teamwork states certification in 17 OEM programs and Reunion Marketing names Jaguar Land Rover, Audi, BMW Motorrad and Subaru. An agency that cannot answer this question quickly has not worked with franchise stores.

Ask about market exclusivity, and be precise about what the market means. Two agencies here sell one client per market: Dealer Authority offers exclusivity to its SEO clients, and Auto Repair SEO states it will not work with a shop’s local competitors. Exclusivity protects a dealer from competing against its own vendor and also limits who that dealer can hire. The useful follow-up is the radius: exclusivity inside a ZIP code is worth less than exclusivity inside a designated market area, and the two are often described in the same sentence. A3 Brands sells to dealerships only, which is a different promise and is worth not confusing with this one.

Treat the percentage in a case study as the least interesting figure in it. This cohort publishes a 400% average lead increase, a 234% keyword gain, a 150% average lead increase and a 500% first-year return, and a percentage with no starting point fits almost any underlying reality. The figures a general manager can act on are units sold, vehicle detail page views, phone calls and form fills per store per month. An agency holding those numbers will usually offer them.

Questions to ask before hiring

Which website platform do most of your dealer clients run, and what can you actually change on it? The platform decides how much of the technical work is even possible. An agency that has worked on your platform will name the constraints without being prompted.

What do you do with a vehicle detail page after the car sells? Inventory turnover is the defining technical problem of dealership SEO. The answer tells you whether the agency treats the site as a catalog or as a brochure.

Which OEM programs are you certified in, and does the work qualify for co-op? Certification decides whether the manufacturer reimburses part of the spend. An uncertified vendor can be the right choice, and the dealer should make that choice knowing the cost.

Do you already work with another dealer in my market, and how do you define the market? Exclusivity is common in this cohort and is defined loosely. Get the radius in writing rather than the principle.

What is your monthly price, and what does it exclude? Three of the fifteen agencies here publish a price on their own site. Get the figure in writing, then ask separately what content, links and technical work sit inside it and what gets billed on top.

Which of these numbers would you agree to be measured on in six months? Rankings and sessions are easy to move and easy to present. Units sold, vehicle detail page views and phone calls per store are what a dealership is paying for.

Updates: positions re-checked weekly against the live SERP; the full index is recomputed monthly. First edition under index 4.0 for this market. The live SERP was read 2026-09-18, every page was fetched and measured 2026-09-18, and the brand, review and AI figures were pulled 2026-09-18. The anchor keyword is “automotive seo agency”, 2,400 searches a month in the us database at keyword difficulty 5. The cohort is the fourteen agency service pages in the live SERP, captured with valentin.app on the market’s country (United States, the default), read to position 46, plus the publisher; listicles, blog posts, directories and dead URLs are excluded and listed on the methodology page. A top-5 page that can’t be fetched is measured from an HTML file requested from the agency, never skipped and never estimated. Every page was measured with cd_metrics 3.5.2 in whole-body mode. The 151-term list (built by rule from the competitor pages and the Semrush variation set, brand names excluded), the five weights and the constants (k = 10, R₀ = 3, footprint ceilings 10,000 and 500) are frozen at index 4.0; any change will be versioned here rather than applied quietly.

Reading the table

Five pillars make the score, and four of them measure the page rather than the company. Coverage counts how many of the 151 market terms the page uses and carries 40% of the weight. Density passes the page’s contextual density through a saturation curve, so a page at the market median of 9.9% scores 50 and further repetition returns less and less. Efficiency rewards a page that covers its terms without repeating each one, using a repetition index of 3 as par. Structure counts the share of covered terms that reach a title, H1, H2 or H3.

Footprint is the fifth and the only one that measures the company. It averages branded search volume against a ceiling of 10,000 a month with the Google review count weighted by rating against a ceiling of 500, both log-scaled. It carries 15%, the smallest weight of the five, and it is queried on the market’s country. That choice costs ProStar SEO here, because a Québec agency’s brand searches happen largely outside the United States database, and we would rather state the cost than call the pillar neutral. Auto Repair SEO scores zero on this pillar for a different reason: its brand name is its own market’s head term, so no clean brand query exists, and it holds no Google Business Profile under that name.

Google’s own position for each page sits in the second column and never enters the score. Printing it is the point: an index that scored a page partly on where Google already ranks it would be dressing up the SERP as a measurement. The two columns disagree here more than they agree, and Dealer.com ranking first in Google while placing seventh on the index is the clearest instance of it. Whether the index or the SERP is the better guide to a buyer is a question this page does not settle, and we would rather leave it open than pretend otherwise.
